Gottingen: Steidl, 2003. First Edition. Essay and editing by Urs Odermatt. Small folio. Black cloth. Fine in Fine dust jacket. Text in German, French and English.
With thoroughness and meticulous attention to detail, Swiss police officer Arnold Odermatt photographed automobile accidents on the streets of the Swiss Canton Nidwalden, documenting accident scenes and property damage during his 40-year career. In his photos the drivers have gone and the victims have been removed. All thats left are the wrecked cars that tell the stories of excessive speed, drunk driving, right-of-way errors and plain foolishness. The de-formed steel takes on a malleable quality. The cars become sculptures that show the sudden end to many hopes and dreams, the intrusion of the unforeseen into well-regulated daily life. What results from the picture-taking policeman's official work is a selection of melancholic, sometimes funny and always strange atmospheric photos of our mobile society.

Boston: W.M. Leonard, 1912. First edition. MANUAL FOR HARVARD MEDICAL STUDENTS BY LEGENDARY HARVARD PATHOLOGIST W.T. COUNCILMAN-SIGNED BY HIM. 9 1/2 inches tall hardcover, original green cloth binding, spine gilt, ink inscription front free endpaper to Dr. N.C. Foot ""with the kind regards of W.T. Councilman."" Edges lightly age-toned, otherwise very good+. Four 4x5 inch black & white photomicrographs laid in, with note dated 1913-18 Jan. PREFACE This manual has developed from the Syllabus of Pathology published by Councilman and Mallory in 1904, and is designed with special reference to the teaching of the subject. The work gives the plan which has been followed in teaching pathology in the Harvard Medical School, and which has proven to be successful. Illustrations were purposely omitted in the work. Excellent and accurate as are most of the illustrations in the current textbooks of Pathology, they still, when objective, represent areas carefully selected for the illustration of a point, more…

Description:
London, The Linnean Society of London, 1870. Folio (29.2 x 24.2 cm). Single, lithographed leaf - finely coloured by hand. In cardboard frame (35.0 x 24.0 cm). = A fine, large, originally hand-coloured illustration by the famous Dutch bird illustrator John Gerrard Keulemans (1842-1912), showing the vegetarian finch, Camarhynchus variegatus Sclater and Salvin, 1870 (male and female), and in fact the type specimens of this famous bird - being one of the "Darwin finches" of the Galapagos islands, and perhaps better known as Platyspiza crassirostris (John Gould, 1837). Keulemans is widely regarded as the best bird painter of his time, if not the best ever. Published in the Society's Transactions (Vol. 9), the leading zoological series in the 19th century, and one of the very few published in this large format. A few taches de beauté, underscoring its authenticity, left edge a bit irregular, otherwise an excellent, clean copy. The printing and colouring accurate, natural, and strong.…

Description:
Routledge, 1990. 8vo size trade paperback; 390 pages including index From back: "This is a unique study, continuing the work of Merleau-Ponty and Heidegger, and using the techniques of phenomenology against the prevailing nihilism of our culture. It expands our understanding of the human potential for spiritual self-realization by interpreting it as the developing of a bodily-felt awareness informing our gestures and movements. The author argues that a psychological focus on our experiences of well-being and pathology as embodied beings contribute significantly to a historically relevant critique of idealogy. It also provides an essential touchstone in experience for a fruitful individual and collective response to the dangers of nihilism." Edgewear, moderate wear to covers with sunned spine; marginalia, underlining and very light highlighting on least 58 pages prior to page 107; two previously folded page corners, some stray ink marks on outside pages.
