A fine, tight copy, touch of foxing to the outer edges of the text block; in bright, crisp, fine dust jacket. Hardcover. xviii+ 276 pp. New introduction for this edition by Robert Bateman. This "long lost" historical romance set in southern New Jersey during the American Revolution is first issued in1855 as "Kate Aylesford" and again in 1873 as "The Heiress of Sweetwater, both if which are very scarce. The story begins with the orphaned Kate and her aunt sailing home from England and being shipwrecked off the New Jersey coast. They are resuced by Major Gordon and his small band of valiant men. Other highlights include the Revolution's Battle of Chestnut Neck, Kate's kidnapping by a character based on the infamous South Jersey highwayman Joe Mulliner,a nd her subsequent harrowing escape through the Pine Barrens.
