About This Item
New York:: Farrar & Rinehart,, 1941.. First Printing of the First US Edition. A Fine copy in a Very Good clipped dust jacket with a light moisture stain to the head of the spine. This is the story of the Kansas River commonly called the Kaw, and follows the usual pattern of the early history, explorations, settlers, political strife, and then diverges into the two factors that made the state, cattle and wheat. The cattle trails, the cow towns, the coming of the farmers, and the background of wheat culture that made the empire of wheat and brought about the agricultural revolt that was reflected in state and national politics. The dust storms, and the steps taken to save the land. There is a brief chapter on Kansas literary figures and the outstanding Kansas men and women, past and present, are briefly highlighted together with anecdotal material.
