London George Kenning, 1878, hardcover. Both preface and title page are dated 1878. **This copy has two sepia photographs pasted in, opposite to and on verso of title page, with the handwritten names of George Kenning and of A F A Woodford; these are in different hands, but it is not known if they are actually signatures of the two men** Woodford compiled and edited the book, which is a condensation of the immense work by Mackey; Kenning sponsored and published the work. Alphabetical. Includes list of subscribers. Publisher's catalog at rear. -- Hardcover, blue cloth with gold and black embossed decorations, front cover and spine, including gold portraits of three Grand Masters. Condition: very good overall (bright cover with clean pages, with endsheets cracked but still sound binding; spine just faintly darkened, with light rubbing at tips and edges; pp,16-17 soiled apparently in the printing process; edges lightly foxed).
