Some offsetting to the edges, from the glue used in the turn ins of the inner boards, of the blank free endpapers and the first and last text pages (in this case the title page and the list of elder Brethren), otherwise a clean tight copy in a contemporary binding of full panelled brown calf. Both boards with lighter tan central panel with decorative gilt loop border and diagonal cross design. Decorative gilt border around the edge. Central circular red morocco onlay with the Trinity House arms stamped in gilt. Spine with raised bands. Compartments ruled and decorated in gilt. Red title label, gilt. Decorative flower and leaf design to the top and bottom of both boards and a single gilt ruled border to the centre. Board edges with gilt ruling. Spine with five raised bands. The compartments with gilt ruled lines, flower and leaf designs and lettering. Triple gilt ruled lines to the turn-ins. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Previous owners neat inscription, dated 1867, to the half title page. A lovely copy in a beautiful Victorian decorative leather binding. The binding is unsigned but the work of a skilled bookbinder.

Fine copy in recent fine leather binding of full red morocco, spine with five raised bands, gilt. Single gilt ruled border to boards. Chapman & Hall. London. 1952-61. FIRST EDITIONS. Three volumes. 8vo. (7.5 x 5.2 inches). A few small marks to the blank endpapers of Officers and Gentlemen and some offsetting to Men at arms endpapers otherwise bright and clean copies of the books in the publishers dark blue cloth bindings with gilt lettering to the spines. All three in very good original dustwrappers, designed by Val Biro. Some minor chipping to the edges of Officers and gentlemen, while the other two volumes are very bright, fresh and near fine examples without any of the usual fading. The inner flap of the first and last volumes are price-clipped. Overall a very good, attractive set of Waugh's classic trilogy.

Fully illustrated with photogravure frontispieces, 6 original sketches in photogravure by Dr. Wilson,18 coloured plates (16 from drawings by Dr. Wilson), 260 full page and smaller illustrations,from photographs taken by Herbert G. Ponting, and other members of the expedition, panoramas and maps. A very good copy. Publishers blue cloth with gilt lettered to front boards and spines. Top edges gilt. A few faint streaks to the spine of volume one and couple of small abrasions to outer edges of the front board on volume two but overall a very good bright set.:

A clean tidy copy bound, for Truslove and Hanson in London, in early half burgundy morocco, spine with a single raised band, dotted in gilt. Compartments ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt. Red cloth on boards. Top edge gilt. A small amount of wear to the extremities and some marks to the cloth boards but still overall a very good, attractive copy.

Macmillan and Co Limited . London. 1951 - 52. Two volumes. Reprints; 1st book, 1951; 2nd is 1950. 8vo. (7.8 x 5.5 inches). With illustrations by J. Lockwood Kipling and W. H. Drake in The Jungle Book, just Kipling in the second Jungle book. Fine, clean copies. Fine leather bindings, by Bumpus, of mid twentieth century half dark red morocco. Spines with five raised bands, compartments ruled in blind and lettered in gilt. Red cloth on boards. Top edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Just a hint of darkening to the spines of both bindings but overall this is a near fine, lovely set of these classic books.

Gay and Bird. London. 1904. LIMITED EDITION. Small 8vo. (5.2 x 3.3 inches). One of 60 copies printed on Japanese vellum, numbered and signed by the Publishers. Portrait frontis and a handful of head and tail pieces by Herbert Cole. Finely bound in early full dark brown morocco by Zaehnsdorf. Raised bands on spine, each with gilt piping. Compartments ruled lettered and decorated in gilt. Gilt double ruled borders on boards with elaborate floral corner pieces. Board edges ruled in gilt. Burgundy silk endpapers. Decorative gilt tooled borders and floral design to turn-ins. Top edge gilt. A fine and attractive binding.

Chapman & Hall Ltd. London. 1933. Manuscript copy of the book in a neat hand, with the writer's brief notes in the margins, in a ruled notebook. (10 x 8.1 inches). Calligraphic title page, the text written in black, red and green inks. Photo negative of the fold out 'Street of taste' pull-out and typed leaf of 'The growth of good taste' tree, both loosely inserted. The corresponding page numbers from the 1933 first edition are noted in the margins, and the text contains the unchanged poem on page 119, suggesting that this was copied from a first issue of the first edition. Half beige buckram binding with marbled paper on boards. Marbled endpapers. All edges speckled with red. A fine copy of this curious but attractive item.
