About the author

John Cannon held the chair of Modern History at Newcastle upon Tyne until 1992. He is the editor of The Letters of Junius and The Oxford Companion to British History, and is the author of The Illustrated History of the British Monarchy. Anne Hargreaves was formerly a clinical academic at the Welsh National School of Medicine, and at the Universities of Liverpool and Newcastle upon Tyne. She was a major contributor to The Oxford Companion to British History.
