Cincinnati: Swormstedt and Poe, 1859. Half-Leather. Good. Half leather with marbled boards. 762 pp. Black and white illustrated plates throughout. A bound volume of this monthly journal devoted to literature, poetry and religious topics, produced by members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Includes a portrait of African-American missionary bishop, Francis Burns, in Liberia, with a background of Monrovia in Liberia, adapting a view of the city originally by African-American photographer Augustus Washington. Topics in this volume include an account, presumably by a missionary of a travel through China, including to Tiong-Lok, among other places; African life; several pieces on photography; Edgar Allan Poe; woman's question in China; the world of the East, as well as many short pieces on items such as: photograph of Saturn; beer as food; explorations in Brazil; African missions; burial of the last Shawnee chief; missions in India; Texas wealth; Japan, etc. GOOD condition. Covers scuffed, with some soiling. Upper two inches of leather MISSING from the spine. Heavy scuffing and bumping along the extremities. Moderate to heavy scattered foxing throughout.
