Description

1st Edition . Soft cover. Good/No Jacket. According to Wiki-Pedia: Lawrence's novel was successfully dramatised for the stage in a three-act play by a young British playwright named John Harte. Although produced at The Arts Theatre in London in 1961 (and elsewhere later on), his play was written in 1953. It was the only D. H. Lawrence novel ever to be staged and his dramatisation was the only one to be read and approved by Lawrence's widow, Frieda. I find no other presentations until now. Earlier, in 1931, Samuel Roth had done a similar adaptation. Here we have a previously-unknown third, Dorik's version with his two-page comments that by1965 his version had been performed in more than two dozen stock theatres across the country with some success. His comments and the play as a working script (with seven characters, the1981 film had fifteen major parts) are all mimeographed with a few of pages slightly loose from their bracket. I can find no mention of Dorik anywhere nor does he seem to have published anything beyond this work which is in rough mimeograph format. Blue paper folder, no title label. His comments sheets offer a glimpse into his efforts to bring this play alive with both the original themes and sexuality intact but with added comedy and energy. How one version progressed is also discussed. Good.
