Profusely illustrated with 63 illustrations throughout. Sir Walter Scott, 1st Baronet (15 August 1771 21 September 1832) was a prolific Scottish historical novelist and poet popular throughout Europe during his time. 'The Lady of the Lake' is a narrative poem by Sir Walter Scott, first published in 1810. Set in the Trossachs region of Scotland, it is composed of six cantos, each of which concerns the action of a single day. The poem has three main plots: the contest among three men, Roderick Dhu, James Fitz-James, and Malcolm Graeme, to win the love of Ellen Douglas; the feud and reconciliation of King James V of Scotland and James Douglas; and a war between the lowland Scots (led by James V) and the highland clans (led by Roderick Dhu of Clan Alpine). The poem was tremendously influential in the nineteenth century, and did much to inspire the Highland Revival. Hardbound volume in green cloth covered boards with gilt fore edge, elaborate gilt detailing to the spine and boards. Externally, generally smart. Light fading to the spine. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and also to the extremities. Light marks to the front and rear boards. The front hinge is strained but firm. Bookplate to the front pastedown, and a small bookbinders label to the rear pastedown. Two ink inscriptions to the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally clean with the occasional mark and the odd spot. The tissue paper protecting the frontispiece is age-toned. Very Good
Synopsis
The Lady of the Lake marked the pinnacle of Scott's popularity as a poet. With 25,000 copies sold in eight months, it broke all records for the sale of poetry. Known as a romantic poem, it tells about love and honor amidst a bitter rivalry between King James V and the Douglas family. The book is set in the Trossachs region of Scotland and it is composed of six cantos, each concern the action of a single day.
