1926. New York: George H. Doran Company, (1926). Original yellow-green cloth, with dust jacket. First American Edition, published two months after the English. This is Doyle's psychic novel, for which he resurrected Professor Challenger (who had journeyed to the land of the dinosaurs in THE LOST WORLD and had faced the end of human life in THE POISON BELT; he would later return for two short stories, "When the World Screamed" and "The Disintegration Machine"). By the 1920s, following the loss of his son and his brother at the end of the Great War, Doyle's preoccupation was spiritualism; just as his other semi-autobiographical novel THE STARK MUNRO LETTERS had provided insights into Doyle's early years in medicine, so THE LAND OF MIST does into his later years in spiritualism. Unlike the non-fiction books on spiritualism, the novel has a clear narrative, with the hero and heroine taking in one aspect or other of the occult at a time... Lord John Roxton is compelled to change his tune after a session in a haunted house, an episode in which Doyle was in his element: '... Great God! They are moving! They were rushing swiftly and noiselessly downwards! Black, black as night, huge, ill-defined, semi-human and altogether evil and damnable.' [Pearsall, quoting from the text] This is a bright, near-fine copy (just a hint of cover soil). The quite scarce dust jacket (which on the front panel portrays a glowering Challenger filling an easy chair to capacity, and is printed with ads on the reverse side) is very good -- a few small edge-chips, very light soil. Green & Gibson A45b.
