He also serves as Director of the National Center for History in the Schools, an organization designed to help educators teach United States and world history. He is also the author of many books including First City: Philadelphia and the Forging of Historical Memory, The Urban Crucible: Social Change, Political Consciousness, and the Origins of the American Revolution, and Race and Revolution.
