A lovely clean copy finely bound, by Maurin, in contemporary full dark blue morocco. Spine with two raised bands, each with gilt wavy lines. Compartments ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt, including the March Hare within a floral border. Double ruled gilt border on both boards with circular gilt illustration of Alice carrying the pig on the front board. Board edges with gilt ruled line. Gilt inner dentelles and double ruled borders. Multi coloured floral endpapers. Top edge gilt. Purple silk page marker. A bump to the top outer corner of the lower board, but otherwise a near fine copy in an attractive mid twentieth century fine binding.

Some general thumbing and spotting to most pages. The hand colouring is still bright and vivid throughout. Dis-bound, but complete, in original fawn card boards, printed in black. The boards are rubbed and worn, making some the the printed area quite faint, and there are a few stains. Previous owner names and gift inscriptions, one dated 1820, on the inner front board. ---- Rare in first edition. Original dark green cloth front cover, showing Toad, Ratty and Mole, all in gilt, bound in at rear. ----- The thirty eighth edition overall, this is the first to feature the wonderful drawings by Shepard which haven't been out of print since. After his drawings for the A. A. Milne Pooh books, these are Shepard's most enduring, & endearing, illustrations.

Small bookseller label to the bottom of the front free endpaper. A fine and spotless copy of the book in publishers dark green cloth binding with gilt illustrations and lettering to the front board and spine. In the rare original illustrated dustwrapper, printed in red and green on beige paper. The red ink on the spine is faded and there are a couple of very small chips but overall this is a very smart example of the wrapper on a truly fine book. This first American edition uses sheets from the English edition, prnited by Ballantyne and Company in London. An uncommon survivor in such lovely condition.
