About This Item

London: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner, & Co LTD, 1899. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 7.5" by 5". None. A first edition historical work which endeavors to give a concise description of the First Boer War of 1880-1881, written by H. Rider Haggard. First Edition, first printing. In the publisher's original paper wraps. This is a comprehensive historical account of the Boer Rebellion of 1881, which was written by H. Rider Haggard in 1882 but not published until 1889. Haggard refers to this conflict as the 'last' Boer War, unaware of the subsequent Second Boer War that would take place from 1899 to 1902. This work gives information on the rebellion which was fought from 1880 until 1881 between the United Kingdom and the Boers of the Transvaal, resulting in a Boer victory and the eventual independence of the South African Republic. Contents include 'Its Inhabitants, Laws, and Customs', 'Events Preceding the Annexation', 'The Transvaal Under British Rule', and 'The Boer Rebellion'. H. Rider Haggard (1856-1925) was an English writer of adventure fiction romances, particularly ones that were set in exotic locations. He was a pioneer of the lost world literary genre, and lived in South Africa from the years 1875 to 1882.With one page of publisher's adverts to rear of wraps.Collated, complete. In the publisher's original paper wraps. Externally, generally smart. Fading and discolouration to the margins of wraps, with a bit of cracking to the spine. Minimal edge wear to the extremities and to the head and tail of spine. Light foxing to endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean, with light age-toning to margins. Final page of text has a tear which as resulted in a closed hole in the middle of the page. Very Good
