About This Item

New York: The Dial Press, 1970. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. Review copy, with the publisher's slip and press release laid in. Inscribed by Darryl Ponicsan on the half-title. The author's first novel, which follows two career sailors assigned to escort a young emotionally withdrawn recruit from their Virginia base to Portsmouth Naval Prison in Maine. It served as the basis for the 1973 Hal Ashby film starring Jack Nicholson, Otis Young, Randy Quaid, Clifton James, and Carol Kane. Octavo. Original blue cloth binding, with yellow titles. Some minor shelfwear to the dust jacket, with a bit of fading along the extremities; otherwise very good.
