From the collection of Betty Anderson, legendary art director of publisher Knopf in the late 20th century as evidenced by her (small and unobtrusive) inventory number on front paste down; The Last and the First is a story set in the time of the Roman Empire that follows the intertwined lives of two young lovers, Septimius and Julia. Julia, the daughter of a senator, is betrothed to a wealthy man but she has feelings for Septimius, a slave. When the emperor decides to put an end to the slave rebellion, Septimius and Julia must flee for their lives. They end up living in a small village in Gaul, where Septimius is able to get a job as a gardener. Julia eventually finds out where Septimius is and they reunite.
