Julia, the daughter of a senator, is betrothed to a wealthy man but she has feelings for Septimius, a slave. When the emperor decides to put an end to the slave rebellion, Septimius and Julia must flee for their lives. They end up living in a small village in Gaul, where Septimius is able to get a job as a gardener. Julia eventually finds out where Septimius is and they reunite.
