Dubbed riders of the "Empire Express" American pilots stationed in the Aleutians flew nine-hour missions in sub-zero temperatures to bomb Japanese installations in the Kuril Islands. Based on crash investigations, the author re-creates the crew's daunting exploits, that of US Navy pilot Walt S. Whitman, and the missions of Japan's pilots and the fate of those captured and interned in Siberia. A moving portrait of servicemen in the forgotten frozen battleground of WWII. A clean and very presentable copy.
