The author traveled to Dachau, Germany, home of the first Nazi concentration camp, looking for the community that inhabits the town today. Upon seeing Dachau for the first time, Timothy Ryback set out to investigate the way the older generation dealt with a past they knew first hand, and how the younger generations lived life under Dachau's shadow. He found Martin Zaidenstadt, who claimed to be a Holocaust survivor and came to the camp every day for the last 53 years. However, Zaidenstadt may not be either a survivor or indeed a Jew. A fascinating story if quite pathetic.
