About This Item

New York: Dodd, Mead & Company. Very Good+ in Very Good dj. 1937. First Edition. Hardcover. [modest shelfwear to spine extremities and lower front corner (very slight exposure of board there), age-toning and light soiling to edges of text block, one-time owner's initials plus date & place of purchase in ink along edge of rear pastedown (concealed beneath rear jacket flap); the jacket is lightly edgeworn, with a tiny chip at the base of the spine and a 3-inch closed tear (internally tape-repaired) at the top of the front panel]. (Red Badge Detective) Series Murder mystery set aboard a small, one-cabin passenger ship (with a helpful Note at the beginning of the book, explaining the layout for the benefit of "those who have never sailed on so small a boat." Fortunately, there's a p.i. aboard the boat (isn't there always?): Peter Clancy, and his very proper English valet, Wiggins. The author wrote more than sixty mystery novels between 1919 and 1996, publishing her final book at the age of 92; nearly all of them featured Clancy and Wiggins, whose effective crime-solving relationship has been likened to that of P.G. Wodehouse's Bertie Wooster and Jeeves. .
