FIRST EDITION 1925, EDITION LIMITED TO 250 COPIES SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR PRINTED ON HANDMADE PAPER WITH 5 EXTRA COLOUR PLATES, THIS COPY BEING NUMBER 176, 4to, approximately 290 x 220 mm, 11½ x 8½ inches, 81 plates, numbered 1-76 and A-E, all with captioned tissued guards, the first 31 of which are in colour (including the 5 extra plates numbered A-E), the rest in black and white, 9 coloured plates are folding, a few small text illustrations and illustrations of potter's marks, pages: xxix, 155, [1], bound in the publisher's original half dark brown pigskin over brown cloth, gilt lettering to spine, top edges gilt. Very slight rubbing to head and tail of spine and corners, upper corners bumped with bumping showing as very light creasing to top outer corners of pages throughout, not affecting images, slight shelf wear to bottom edges, no inscriptions. A very good clean tight sturdy copy (top corners bumped as noted). This edition with 5 extra coloured plates (called for on Plate list), a very good copy. Bound in between wooden boards, title label blank. Chinese ownership marks endpaper. Modern professional Japanese paper repairs to spine. Very attractive album. A charming collection of Chinese pictures showing a variety of domestic, court and mythological scenes. This album contains no clues as to the purpose of these delightful images. There is no title or accompanying text and they are as is typical of these types of illustrations unsigned. They may have been produced for the tourist trade or maybe as a gift book? .
