1583 Voyages of Christopher Columbus Navigation Gambara Peter Martyr New World
An incredible 16th-century epic work on the voyages of Columbus!
Lorenzo Gambara was a 16th-century Italian poet who is known exclusively for his poem 'Colombiade' – an epic poem on the life and adventures of Christopher Columbus. While not published until 1581, it was commissioned by Anthony Perrenot, a Burgundian cleric, nearly 40 years earlier. This work was one of the most important early accounts of Columbus. Note this passage from Mary Watt,
"The timing of the poem and patron to whom it was dedicated, speak loudly to the role that the expedition played in the early 16th-century Italian imagination. The poem consists of four books, recounting Columbus's four voyages respectively. Gambara used Peter Martyr's accounts as his foundation so that his poem represents an Italian interpretation of the New World. Gambara describes Columbus's voyages as having exceeded those of Hercules. Columbus has surpassed the ancients, and in Dante-esque fashion not only passed through the danger but made it to the other shore safely…(Watt, p.126-127)
Curiously, Gambara was so determined to promote Italian pride, that he describes the towns that Columbus discovered in the New World as Roman – Roman streets, forums, assembly, senate, "implying that the landing signals are a return to a Roman Golden Age" and that an imperial Roman plan has been established to take over the New World.
