About This Item
J. M. Dent & Company, London. 1911, 1911. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 12 mo., hardcover, VG in red cloth boards with gilt lettering and design on spine. No dj. 547 pages. Introduction by Thomas Seccombe. "Borrow's publishers suggested that he should write his autobiography. Lavengro is the result, but it is regarded as containing as much fiction as fact. It is a book in two parts, the first consisting of a relatively straightforward autobiography from 1803 to 1825, the second enshrining a summer-dream interlude between a itinerant scholar and a commanding young woman, by profession a tramp, varied by dialogues in which a sharking missionary priest from Rome )the man in black), a Roman crallis or chieftan (Jasper Petulengro), a postillion, and a publican participate.
