Green buckram with gilt lettering on spine and front board, top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed, many pages as yet unopened. 12 tipped in colour plates (including frontispiece) with captions & guards - all present, clean & bright. George Borrow's "autobiographical novel" takes the reader from his childhood and early travels around Scotland, England and Ireland, to his beginnings as a writer in London and on to his wanderings as a tinker in early 19th century England. ------ Light browning at top/bottom edges of spine, light wrinkling at top of spine, some light foxing marks on preliminary page and on one rear page, light toning and a few light foxing marks on untrimmed edges of pages, large margin tear archivally taped on page leaf 405/406. The dust jacket, with a pastedown colour illustration (lacking bottom right corner), appears to have been trimmed at some time in the past to 'even it up'. It has a few very small tears & creases, a small hole and light wrinkling mid-spine and is now protected in a removable mylar sleeve.. Hard Cover. Very Good-/Fair. Illus. by Edmund J. Sullivan..

Synopsis

Lavengro: The Scholar, the Gypsy, the Priest is a work by George Borrow, falling somewhere between the genres of memoir and novel, which has long been considered a classic of 19th century English literature. According to the author lav-engro is a Romany word meaning "word master". The historian G. M. Trevelyan called it "a book that breathes the spirit of that period of strong and eccentric characters".
