Description:
New York: Harcourt Brace and Company, 1952. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. First edition. Spine a little faded, near fine in the gray binding (one of three, with no priority) in a very near fine, price-clipped dustwrapper with a couple of tiny tears and nominal rubbing. Inscribed by the author in the year of publication: "For Charles Crow. Cordially Bern. July 1952." Crow was a friend of Malamud's from New York, and advised Malamud when he was applying for teaching positions, eventually accepting a position at Oregon State College. Crow's advice to Malamud is quoted in *Bernard Malamud: A Writer's Life* by Philip Maurice Davis. An especially nice copy of the author's first book, perhaps *the* classic baseball novel, and basis for the Barry Levinson film starring Robert Redford, Robert Duvall, Glenn Close, and Kim Basinger.

A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN
by Ganz, Lowell, and Babaloo Mandel [screenwriters]

- Hardcover
[Np: Columbia Pictures / Parkway Productions], 1991. [4],123 leaves, expanded by lettered inserts. Quarto. Photomechanically reproduced typescript, printed on rectos only of white and eight other colored stocks. Bradbound. Last several leaves show tidemarks along lower margins and gutters, with a trace of faint rippling (but no staining) continuing on into a few more leaves, two ink names (see below), else very good. A heavily revised "Final Shooting Script," with eight stages of substantial dated revises beyond that draft (i.e. a "rainbow" script). Ganze and Mandel's adaptation to the screen of a story by Kim Wilson and Kelly Candaele based on the experiences some of the players in the All-American Girls Baseball League during the years of WWII. Penny Marshall directed the highly successful film with an ensemble cast that included Tom Hanks, Gena Davis, Madonna, Rosie O'Donnell, David Strathaim, Tracy Reiner, Kelli Simpkins, and many others. This script bears the ownership signature of Les Lazarowitz, the production sound mixer, as well as his name in block print (a designation as part of script distribution, perhaps) and a few relevant annotations in the text. The script is accompanied by a black leather covered baseball, signed in gold ink by a number of cast and production members, including Tom Hanks, Madonna, Gena Davis, Penny Marshall, Rosie O'Donnell, Robin Knight, Tracy Reiner, Janet Jones Gretzky, Pepper Pairie (one of the original league players) and Neezer Tarleton. The baseball is attended by a handwritten and signed attestation by Les Lazarowitz about his obtaining the signatures during the film's production.
