About the author

Glyn C. Roberts, PhD, is a professor of sport psychology at the Norwegian University of Sport Science. He was a member of the Department of Kinesiology from 1973 to 1998 at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where he is now professor emeritus. Dr. Roberts' research has focused on the motivational determinants of achievement and children in the competitive sport experience. He is regarded as one of the leading authorities in the world on motivation and achievement in the sport experience, especially for children.

The author of more than 100 publications, Dr. Roberts has written or edited 14 books, as well as 36 book chapters. He has made more than 250 presentations, including more than 30 keynote addresses at international congresses. In 1998 he was named as a Distinguished Scholar of the North American Society for the Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity (NASPSPA), only one of six people so recognized by NASPSPA.

Kevin S. Spink, PhD, is a professor of sport psychology in the College of Kinesiology at the University of Saskatchewan. He is the author or coauthor of five previous books on sport psychology and is a former Associate Editor of the Journal of Applied Sport Psychology. Dr. Spink has been widely published in journals of sport and exercise psychology and has lectured on the subject internationally.

Dr. Spink is a member of the Association for the Advancement of Applied Sport Psychology (AAASP), NASPSPA, and the International Association of Applied Psychology. He also is a member of the Board of Directors for the Canadian Fitness and Lifestyle Research Institute.

Cynthia Pemberton, PhD, is an Associate Professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where she is the chairperson of the Department of Physical Education. She received her PhD in sport and exercise psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Dr. Pemberton is a Certified Consultant in AAASP and a member of the United States Olympic Committee Sport Psychology Registry. She is also a Fellow in the Research Consortium of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance and has served as a Past President of the American Association for Active Lifestyles and Fitness.
