London: Chatto and Windus, 1918. Special edition of this book, bound in vellum with gold lettering. Book states there were only twelve copies printed of which ten are for sale, this is number 9.Translated from the French by Geoffrey Whitworth. There are twenty woodcut illustrations by Albert Delstanche, these are pulled by hand and each SIGNED by the artist, real signatures not facsimiles.Illustrations are clean and protected by tissue guards, other pages have occasional foxing spots as do a few tissue guards this has protected the illustrations only very slight very light tiny spots on the illustrations, half title page is a little more foxed than the others. Endpapers are lightly foxed and outer edges of untrimmed pages are browned. Outer vellum covers are a little yellowed on edges and on spine, rear bottom left corner has small crease, top edges of pages are gold, this is dull and worn away in places,some light marking and a little dusty from age. A contemporary review of the book from the Times educational Supplement perhaps sums it up best; "It is fair to say that the author explores a landscape which suggests Magritte and Monty Python. The humour is austere, bleak and if not black, at least charcoal grey. As a feat of imagination the work is outstanding.".

This edition was printed on thicker high quality paper. With frontispiece portrait of Thomas Bewick, 4 portraits of Bewick by different engravers, and numerous engravings to illustrate the Fables. Contents: frontispiece; title page with small ink signature to top dated 1824; advertisement; Memoir; Catalogue; portraits; table of contents; select fables - pp1-332. The binding has gilt-lined raised bands to the spine and marbled boards. Page edges lightly marbled. The binding has wear to corners and the top and bottom of the spine but is in very good clean condition. There are some faded areas to the foredge marbling. The original endpapers are present. The preliminaries and the frontispiece are very spotty, and the frontispiece has a small repaired section in the gutter. In original green decorative cloth binding with gilt design on front board and spine. The binding is clean with bright gilt to the front board and spine. It has been professionally rebacked so is sound and tight. There is slight marking at the bottom edge of the front board and some very slightly paler areas on the back board. Corners with light wear. The original green endpapers are present with an inscription dated Xmas 1908 to the fep. There is some light foxing to the half title. Contents in very good condition being very clean with some light toning to page edges. The plate at p11 has a small corner crease and the tissue guard to the plate at p126 is creased.

There are a couple of barely perceptible stains on the rear board. The spine ends are gently bumped, and there are a couple of small indentations in the top edges of the covers. The spine is very subtly rolled. There is a contemporary gift inscription on the front free endsheet. The rear endsheet has several small light stains. "His cunning head bent and his little nose went Right down, while his tongue flashed red- When, O, what a sight! The fish in their fright Splashed water all over his head.
