Summary

This is a work of science fiction. The main character is an American academic visiting present day, (1930s,) Rome. In some unexplained way he finds himself transported back to the sixth century. Once adjusted to his new circumstance, he tries to lessen or even halt the decline of civilization in the Italian peninsula. I read this in the 1990s and to my surprise found it quite enjoyable.
