1704 Lexicon Technicum John Harris 1st English SCIENCES Isaac Newton Optics

'The first technical dictionary in any language!'(PMM)

"it was the first work of the kind professing to embrace a detailed view of the whole body of the sciences and arts." (Lowndes)

'Lexicon Technicum' was the first English language dictionary of arts and sciences. First printed in 1704 in London, 'Lexicon Technicum' became the first book to be identified as a dictionary, or 'word-book' as opposed to an encyclopedia. John Harris was the first to make a distinction between the two types of major references and his 'Universal English Dictionary' was the first to encyclopedia to be organized in an alphabetical order.

This work is especially notable for being the first work to include the consultation of experts, in this case, Isaac Newton who contributed excerpts on various topics such as gravity, planetary motion, behavior of light, and his own 'De Natura Acidorum' – Newton's only work on chemistry. Newton also included his treatises on optics.

Description:
1856 1ed Narrative of Expedition American Squadron Perry Hawkes JAPAN China MAPS

First and only complete edition of Commodore Perry's Japan Expedition!

Matthew Perry was one of the most important American Naval officers during the 19th-century. While he was notable for his involvement in the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War, his most famous accomplishment came as the leader of a voyage to Japan beginning in 1852 aboard the East India Squadron. This series of short visits sought to pursue Japanese trade treaties, but Perry and his crew discovered much more – Japanese and Chinese cultures, politics, coal mining and agriculture, as well as attempts at occupation of Formosa. While many events came from this expedition, according to Hill,
"the most important result was that the visit contributed to the collapse of the feudal regime and to the modernization of Japan"

The events of this expedition were recorded by Perry and Francis Hawks in the 1856 account "Narrative of the Expedition of an… Read More

Roger Long was an 18th-century English astronomer from Cambridge. In this treatise, Long covers the surface and phases of the moon, planetary orbits, the rings of Saturn, comets and meteors, behavior of sunlight, the zodiac and astrological signs, as well as the importance of astronomy on navigation.
While the contents of this book are extensive, the full-page and folding engravings set this work apart from other astronomy texts of this era.

London: Printed For Dan. Brown Et Al 1704 And 1710. Fine. Hardcover. First edition two volumes folio unpaginated. Volume 1 Engraved frontis of John Harris, seven engraved plates, two folding plates and numerous illustrations in text. Its professed advantage over French dictionaries of the arts and sciences was that it contained explanation not only of the terms used in the arts and sciences, but also of the arts and sciences themselves. Volume two unpaginated one engraved plate and six folding. A large part of the volume consists of mathematical and astronomical tables, since Harris intended his work to serve as a small mathematical library. He provided tables of logarithms, sines, tangents, and secants, a two-page list of books, and an index of the articles in both volumes under 26 headings, filling 50 pages. Both volumes have been beautifully bound in cambridge panelled calf. With plain endpapers. A superb set. .

THE FIRST TECHNICAL DICTIONARY IN ANY LANGUAGE (PMM 171a) . First edition of perhaps the most important single source for the history of science and engineering at the end of the scientific revolution. Its emphasis on technology, comparatively poorly covered by seventeenth century books, is particularly valuable primary material, while the author's access to Newton and others has been frequently emphasized.
