Boards in good conditions. Cracking at the heel of the hinge between the backboard and the spine. Corners are grazed and the board under the marbled paper is appearing. Evident shelf wear. Very small hole near the edge of the backboard. Free front end page is partially loose. Gutter at the end of the book (page 179) is cracked and binding is visible. Text block is in very good conditions, still quite tight with very rare light foxing on scattered pages. Very light wet marks on page 3. Edges a bit age tanned. Small tear on the top of page 39 but not affecting the text. See Photos.

Condition: pale-blue paper covers slightly worn and grubby, but interior fresh and vibrant. First page in each volume with a large red illegible stamp (two on text pages, two on flower plates). A few plates with white flowers oxidized.
Bairei Kono (1844-1895) was a Japanese painter, book illustrator and art teacher famous for his botanicals and kacho-e (flower and bird) paintings.

Rare original poetry book with cloth covered boards, copyright 1880 by J. W. Shoemaker & Co. This edition published in 1906 by the Penn Publishing company, Philadelphia. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
