About This Item
Title Translates to "The Book of St. Mary of Cahchou: Register of Charters of the Tiron Abbey of Kelso, 1113-1567. In two volumes. Very good books. Brown cloth covered boards, professionally repaired with original spines and paper labels laid on, new end papers. Age-darkening to external page edges. Text pages are age-toned. Occasional penciled margin notes. Sm4to. 11" by 8 3/4". Vol I: Full color frontispiece with tissue-guard. Title page followed by Presentation page "To the Bannatyne Club by the Duke of Roxburgh." (4) The Bannatyne Club (members) January M.DCCC.XLVI., Preface iii-lii, 3 Charter Documents, Table of Plates (in English) (3), Tabula i-xxvii, 256; Vol II: 257-583. (Please forgive humble attempts of pagination, hopefully you will have a good idea.) The Preface in Vol I is in English, all other text appears to be in Latin. Frontispiece of Vol I is a facsimile of the illuminated initial charter of Malcolm IV., 1159, containing miniature portraits of David I and Malcolm IV. Within the 50 plus pages of the Preface, there are three in-text architectural illustrations with tissue guards. The many paneled color fold-out at page 1 is "A fac-simile of the whole charter after the copper of Anderson's diplomata, corrected by the original, and coloured to represent it." Two additional plates in Vol I are "Fac-simile of the Register, giving the first copy of the charter to Theobaldus Flamaticus" and "Fac-simile of the Register, giving the second engrossing of Theobald's charter." Vol II has a plate of the "Fac-simile of the Register, giving the commencement of the Rotulus Reddituum," and a plate of the "Fac-simile of the Register, giving the commencement of the roll of the Abbey's churches in the Rotulus Reddituum." At the very end of Vol II, just before the back-free endpaper, is a plate showing the four seals of Kelso. All plates have tissue-guards. The gutter at this last plate is cracked but holding; the lower end of the plate and end-paper leaves have a 1 1/2" open tear from the gutter. Please use close-up options for best inspection and in support of condition descriptions. Additional photos available at your request.
