This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition; second-state printing, with all points present with the exception of the mis-spelling on p[age 123, which has been corrected. Green leather boards with black leather tips and spine; titling in gilt within a red compartment; panels separated by gilt decorations.Clean text; xvi, 624 pages; ribbon marker, currently at page 272. Engraved frontis portrait [from a painting by Daniel Maclise] of the young and quite handsome Charles Dickens, with 39 other illustrations within by Phiz. Marbled endpapers and all page ends Light spotting to the Title Page; some edge toning within at the illustrations, but generally a nicely bright and clear text. Bumped corners and rubbing at margins, but quite sound.. First Edition. Full-Leather. Very Good/No Jacket. Illus. by Phiz (Hablot Knight Browne). 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Synopsis

Nicholas Nickleby is left responsible for his mother and sister when his father dies. The novel follows his attempt to succeed in supporting them, despite his uncle Ralph's antagonistic lack of belief in him. It is one of Dickens' early comic novels.
