1798 1ed English Life of Catherine II the Great of RUSSIA by Castera HUGE MAP 3v

Catherine II was an 18th-century Empress of Russia, who is better known today as Catherine the Great. It was under her reign than Russian gained prominence in Europe and entered the Golden Age of Russia or the 'Catherinian Era'.

While Catherine's court in St. Petersburg, French historiographer Jean-Henri Castera anonymously published a life of empress immediately following her death. It is famous for its accuracy and its deliberate intentions of immortalizing Catherine. This book also provides descriptions of the Russian military organization and administration, as commentary on Russian social classes and serfs. This first English edition was published in 1798 London and features an hugely desirable folding map of the Russian Empire under Catherine II.

1678 ENGLISH Quevedo Visions Occult GHOSTS Spanish Fantasy Dreams Demons Hell

"He who spends time regretting the past loses the present and risks the future."
― Francisco de Quevedo

Francisco de Quevedo was one of the most well-known Spanish authors of the early 17th-century. He is most remembered for his satirical 'dream' poetry in which he writes himself into his story. 'Dreams' or 'Visions' is a collection of visions in which Quevedo witnesses the Day of Judgment and sees visions of hell, demons and devils, evil spirits being exorcised, and more experiences of the occult. The satire came in the form of Quevedo seeing various recognizable groups of people in hell including lawyers, astrologers, innkeepers, Protestants, accountants, Jews, physicians, and …women.

John Dryden was a 17th-century English poet who was known as England's very first Poet Laureate and would lead England into a literary period that would become known as the Age of Dryden. He also established standard forms of English poetry though his satires, fables, epigrams, poems, and plays.
'Fables, Ancient and Modern' is Dryden's translations of some of the most famous and iconic works of ancient literature. Dryden includes selections from Ovid's 'Metamorphoses', Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales', Homer's 'Iliad', and even stories from Giovanni Boccaccio, all translated into English verse.
This particular 1797 edition is an enormous folio! And the size alone is not the only appeal – this edition contains engravings from the artwork of Diana Beauclerc. Description:
1707 Paradise Lost John Milton Poetry Tonson English Thomas Newton Illustrated

"The mind is its own place, and in itself can make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven."
― John Milton, Paradise Lost

'Paradise Lost' follows the biblical story of the Fall of Man and the temptation of Adam and Eve. Milton himself states that purpose for this book was to "Justify the ways of God to Men". It covers the characters Adam, Eve, and Satan, and the roles each played in the development of religious culture and idolatry.

It was critically acclaimed and well-received by many famed personalities, including Samuel Johnson who states.
"[Paradise Lost shows] Milton's peculiar power to astonish…and he seems to have been well acquainted with his own genius, and to know what it was the Nature had bestowed upon him more bountifully than upon others: the power of displaying the vast, illuminating the splendid, enforcing the awful, darkening the gloomy, and aggravating the dreadful.
