About This Item
London: W. H. Allen & Co., Ltd., 1891. Leather. Very Good. 9" by 6". Gustave Dore. A fascinating biography of renowned French illustrator Gustave Dore, illustrated with plates from the author's own work. Gustave Dore (1832-1883) was a French artist and illustrator best-known for his work with wood-engraving. He completed illustrations for works such as Dante's Inferno, Shakespeare's The Tempest, La Grande Bible de Tours, Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Milton's Paradise Lost. Written by William Blanchard Jerrold (1826-1884), an English author and journalist. This was his final work; Gustave Dore had illustrated numerous works of Blanchard Jerrold's. His other works include 'The Life of George Cruikshank', 'London: a Pilgrimage' and 'At Home in Paris'.With one hundred and thirty-eight illustrations, including thirty-five plates, in-text illustrations by Dore and a frontispiece portrait of the author. Including one folding plate.A fascinating glimpse at the life of this prolific and acclaimed artist. In a quarter crushed morocco binding. Externally generally smart; there is some rubbing to the head of the spine, which is somewhat sunned, and the extremities are a little bumped. Internally, generally firmly bound, with a touch of straining in places. Pages are occasionally spotted, but otherwise bright. Very Good
