Frontispiece portrait engraving of McCosh an dadditional plates integral. A tight example, spine sunned. Tipped onto the front endpapers are photostat copies of a letter from William Sloane to Isabella McCosh (James' widow) and of her reply. Biography of Scottish "School of Common Sense" philosopher and Princeton University (then still called the College of New Jersey) president James McCosh (1811-1894). Educated at the Universities od Glasgow and Edinburgh, he became a minister of the Church of Scotland. By mid-century he was a professor of Logic and Mathematics at Queen's Colleg in Belfast; he served as prisident of Princeton from 1868 to 1888.
