Half leather with marbled boards, endpapers, and all edges.  Attracted decorated spines, with gilt crowns in scrolled borders within ribbed compartments, titles on red labels, vol. nos. on black labels, six compartments in all.  Moderate wear to all extremities with rubbing of board covers. First blank leaf in vol. I is missing. Half-titles have chipped top corners. Bookplates for J. Vernon Findly on front pastedowns.

Trevelyan was once called "a first-rate writer who preferred to be a second- or third-rate statesman." He was, however, a brilliant historian, as indicated by this biography of his famous uncle, Macaulay. Trevelyan sought to follow many of the same hsitorical principles which Lord Macaulay incorporated into his history of England. But while Macaulay was accused of glamorizing history, Trevelyan created a very real portrait of his uncle.
