Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1883. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. Large 8vo. [5], 8-624, [2] pp. Half morocco over pebbled brown cloth, the boards' margins ruled in gilt, spine lettered and decorated in gilt with five raised bands; all edges marbled. Marbled endpapers and pastedowns. Illustrated by a frontispiece, full-page wood engravings, and numerous in-text illustrations (over 300 total illustrations). BAL 3411. Ahearn APG 034c. BAL Intermediate State A, with the illustration on page 441 but with the later caption on page 443. A lovely copy of Twain's autobiographical novel. A Near Fine book with a former owner's gift inscription dated 1888 and a tiny chip to the leather on the top corner of the rear board.
Synopsis
Life on the Mississippi is a memoir by Mark Twain detailing his days as a steamboat pilot on the Mississippi River before and after the American Civil War. The book begins with a brief history of the river from its discovery by Hernando de Soto in 1542. It continues with anecdotes of Twain's training as a steamboat pilot, as the 'cub' of an experienced pilot. He describes, with great affection, the science of navigating the ever-changing Mississippi River.
