Boston: James R. Osgood, 1883. First Edition, Early State. Blanck's intermediate B, with the tailpiece of Twain in flames on p.441 not present, and with caption on p.443 reading "The St. Charles Hotel". Profusely illustrated throughout. Tall 8vo, publisher’s original decorated cloth with black stamped decorations and gilt pictorial vignettes on the upper cover, the spine decorated in black and with a large gilt pictorial vignette, lettered in gilt, a.e.g., protected in a fine slipcase 624 pp. A pleasing and handsome copy, the inner hinges and spine panel sometime refurbished and strengthened expertly. ONE OF TWAIN’S BEST BOOKS AND A RARE AND HANDSOME COPY IN ORIGINAL CLOTH OF THIS IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION. Twain writes about his home and his muse-the great Mississippi. “As a dwelling place for civilized man it is by far the first upon our globe.” (preface)
In this largely autobiographical narrative, Twain gives us a vivid account of his youth on the great river. A brilliant firsthand account of the steamboat age, the science of river piloting, and the life of the river itself from the point of view of those who made their living navigating it. A truly wonderful book and a valued piece of the American legacy.

Description:
London: Chatto & Windus, 1931. First edition of Beckett’s second book. 8vo, original cream boards extensively decorated with pictorial designs on both covers and the spine in brown, in the original and scarce dustjacket of cream paper decoratively printed in blue. Now housed in a red cloth slipcase with morocco label gilt and chemise. 72 pp. A very fine and attractive copy, the cloth and jacket as pristine and essentially mint, the text-block equally fine. FIRST EDITION OF THIS VERY SCARCE EARLY WORK BY SAMUEL BECKETT, ONLY HIS SECOND BOOK, ESSAYS ON THE WRITINGS OF PROUST. Beckett wrote 'Proust' during his stay at the École Normale in Paris in the summer of 1930. Written in response to a commission set forth by Richard Aldington, Thomas MacGreevy and Charles Prentice. Beckett states, on behalf of his subject, “We cannot know and we cannot be known.” The language is both allusive and dense, and served as Beckett's aesthetic and epistemological manifesto. The essay is far more…

London: For L. Davis and C. Reymers, Printers to the Royal Society, 1769. 2 volumes. First edition in English. With half-titles. Tall 8vo, in contemporary full mottled calf, the spines with simple gilt ruled raised bands, buff gilt trimmed and lettered labels and gilt volume numbers. The board edges gilt tooled, page edges speckled in red. xi, [errata], 445; iv, 394, [10] pp. A very fine set, beautifully preserved, the text is fresh and clean with little evidence of use, some very light cosmetic wear to the joints but the hinges firm and strong. FIRST EDITION, QUITE SCARCE AND AN EXCELLENT COPY OF NUGENT'S TRANSLATION OF GROSLEY'S TRAVELS. Although it is stated on the title-page that the authors were Swedish, in fact the author was Pierre Jean Grosley, the prolific French writer known for his erudition and insights. His "Observations on Italy" (originally published in French in 1764) is his most important work. Along with being an excellent account of Italy, Grosley also demonstrates…

Small 8vo, handsomely bound in three-quarter brown morocco over marbled paper covered boards, the spine with raised bands gilt ruled, gilt lettered in two compartments. 150 pp. A fine copy, beautifully preserved, clean and fresh and the binding tight and strong. Endleaves replaced during the rebinding process. RARE FIRST EDITION. A very elusive book. There must be no statement by Twain on the title page relative to the authorization of Routledge as London publisher, the publisher's name must not be followed by "Limited", and the publisher's address must be "The Broadway, Ludgate" and not "The Broadway, Ludgate Hill".
