About This Item
London: for John Murray, Bookseller to the Admiralty and to the Board of Longitude,, 1813. Southey's "Patriotic Manual" First edition, second issue with page 258 of volume II correctly paginated. "Southey constructed an early-nineteenth century hero as a model for the young - in his words, a 'patriotic manual'. He told a friend that he would write 'such a life of Nelson as shall be put into the hands of every youth destined for the Navy'" (Knight, p. 542), as it most assuredly was, coming to dominate the Nelson biography market, and remaining perpetually in print. Two volumes, small octavo. Original drab paper boards, printed paper labels to spines. Engraved portrait frontispiece with tissue-guard to volume 1, frontispiece of volume 2 with five facsimile signatures. Ownership signatures to front free endpapers, pencilled to vol. I; neatly inked to vol. II. Spines rubbed, extremities a little worn, internally clean and crisp. A very good set indeed, with the half-titles and terminal advertisements. Cowie 139; Nash 1; NMM II 927; Roger Knight, The Pursuit of Victory: The Life and Acievement of Horatio Nelson, 2006.
