A delightfully bound, illustrated edition of Boswell's Life of Johnson, with five volumes bound in three, and including hi 'A Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides'. With volume I containing volumes I and II; volume II containing volumes III and IV, and volume III containing volume V.With a frontispiece and vignette illustrated title page to volumes I-V, and a further general title page to volumes I, III and V, along with numerous further vignette illustrations throughout.A landmark work in the development of the modern biography in English, many have claimed this to be the greatest biography ever written. Nevertheless, this biography takes many critical liberties with Johnson's life, with Boswell making various changes to Johnson's quotations and even censoring his comments.Undated; dated via WorldCat. In half calf bindings with cloth covered boards, and gilt detailing to back strips. Externally, lovely. Volume I hinges starting, with boards holding firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright. Very Good
