About This Item

Clapham: Dalesman, 1984. 96 pp, 8 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "(R)ailwaymen recall the busy, exciting days of the Settle-Carlisle line - 72 miles of engineering brilliance and scenic splendour, which began life as the Midland Company's fast, all-weather route to Scotland. Conditions were often bad. The company could be mean-minded towards its staff, expecially in the inter-war years, when a man might be sacked before the year's end and re-employed at the old terms shortly afterwards. Yet the workforce kept a strong spirit, a sense of pride and good humour." Content: An Introduction; The Permanent Way; On the Footplate; A Signalman's Life; Wild Weather; Station Staff; Garsdale Head; Tunnels and Viaducts; Bed and Work; Animals in Transit; A Railway at War; Footplate Tales; Random Memories. Interior - Xmas 2008 and signature on half-title page, small soft bump at top/bottom corners of pages, soft crease at fore-edge of last two pages, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - soft creases at fore-edge of rear cover, light wear at top of spine, tiny and small corner creases on covers, light rubbing.. First Edition. Soft Cover. Good.
