About This Item

Dublin, Ireland: Maunsel and Company Ltd, 1912. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good / Near Fine (slipcase). Jack B. Yeats. Large Octavo, 9.7 in. X 7.2 in., pp. 111. Illustrated by Jack B. Yeats with eight tipped-in color prints, thirty-two black and white line drawings, and sixteen tipped-in monochrome reproductions of paintings. Dark blue cloth boards with gilt title and image of two older men to front; gilt title to spine. Rubbing to extremities. Corners lightly bumped. Old repair to top of spine repaired with inexact color match. Previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown. Light tanning to prelims. Tape ghosts and toning to rear free endpaper. Newer slipcase covered in rich, Italian Vein marbled paper. "Life in the West of Ireland" is an affectionate but unsentimental portrait of a way of life that was disappearing in the early 20th century. Yeats's illustrations document the everyday life of inhabitants of towns like Sligo. From an early age Jack Yeats had an interest in theater and spectacle. (from ZSR Library).
