Description

1921. (REID, WHITELAW). CORTISSOZ, Royal. The Life of Whitelaw Reid: Journalism, War, Politics, Diplomacy. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1921. 2 vols. 1st ed. 8vo. x, 424; vi, 472 pp., frontises. 3/4 morocco with corners, t.e.g. Near fine. American National Biography. 1874 ALS tipped in on a preliminary blank of vol. 1 below a pasted in card stating "compliments of Mrs. Whitelaw Reid." And another note dated 1873 signed by Reid is laid in. Both on New York Tribune letterhead. The laid-in note has residue on the back from having once been mounted. Reid was journalist whose career rose to prominence because of his coverage of the Civil War including his exceptional descriptions of battles of Shiloh and Gettsyburg. Reid joined Horace Greeley at the New York Tribune and would eventually become the owner of the paper. He became a notable political figure serving as Minister to France as well as Ambassador to the United Kingdom for both Roosevelt and Taft. This is a beautifully bound copy of the biography of a storied journalist along with all the extras.
