The frontispiece portrait of Whitelaw Reid is from a photography by Ernest H. Mills. Stamped "Editorial Page Library" on title page. Whitelaw Reid (1837-1912) was editor of the New York Tribune, purchasing it after the death of Horace Greeley in 1872. He served as American ambassador to France from 1889 to 1892 and to Great Britain from 1905 to his death in 1912. In Very Good- Condition: remains of paper library label at tail of spine; cover is lightly soiled; slightly cocked; pages and portrait are clean and tight.
