Cover: soft green paper on boards, moderate fading, rubbing, light dusting of soiling and a couple of small paperpeels, with green title and illustration of Little Obelia inside a large clamshell beneath the water with fish. Board extremeties with thin wear. Spine: green spine wrap with old vertical creasings; head & foot with thin wear. Edges: mild soiling and few only foxings. Eps: b/w illustrations; ffep is tipped in with a few chips to fore-edge. Frontis: colour illustration 'At the Races'. Dedication page with faint few only foxings and short closed split to top-edge and short open split to bottom of guttering. Front hinge with paper peel and surface splitting. Sydney: Angus & Robertson, 1938. GIBBS, May. An early edition of one of Australia's classic children's tales. In 1918 May Gibbs had published the first of her famous Gumnut classics, Snugglepot and Cuddlepie, and the response to her characters was so overwhelming that she continued the Gumnut adventures in further books. Little Obelia is the third in the series: Cuddlepie makes the journey under the sea to find and rescue Ragged Blossom, whilst Snugglepot lives out his particular adventure with Mr. Lizard. "The illustrations show remarkable ingenuity on the part of the artist, who has given a personality to a number of familiar Australian plants and animals...and all the grumpy grown-ups will enjoy them too." (Sydney Mail, quoted by Walsh, p. 128). Small quarto, original decorated papered boards, colour frontispiece and sepia plates, mild preliminary foxing, head of spine a little worn, a very good copy in a worn and chipped dust-jacket.
