About This Item

College Station, TX.: Texas A&M University Press, 1988 Texas A&M University Press, College Station, TX. 1988. Hardcover. Stated First Edition. Signed by the author on the half title page. This is book Number 27 in The Centennial Series of the Association of Former Students, Texas A&M University. Book is tight, square, and unmarked but for a F/O name on the FFFP. Book Condition: Very Good +; light shelfwear to head, tail, and tips; slight soiling on the textblock fore edge from thumbing of pages. DJ: Very Good +; light sunfading to spine; slight bumping to head, tail, and tips; creases to front flap. Brown leatherette boards and spine with bright black lettering on the spine. 332 pp 8vo. On July 26, 1887 the Union Stock Yards Company received a charter to do business in an area just north of town that became known as Cowtown. The author writes of the early days of the cattle drives, the coming of packing plants, the railroads, and the decline that began in 1944. Her study is full of anecdotes about traders, packers, and shippers; analyzes the mistakes of the owners and managers; and evaluates the policies and practices of national moguls Armour and Swift. Overall this is a comprehensive history of Fort Worth. A clean very presentable copy in a Brodart mylar jacket.
