Prima edizione (First edition). Il fotografo Paul Strand dopo la seconda guerra mondiale si dedicò alla realizzazione di libri dedicati a popoli e Paesi. Il fotografo marxista insistette per stamparli a Leipzig, ex Germania dell'Est, adducendo motivi tecnici più che politici, ovvero l'esistenza di uno speciale processo di stampa disponibile unicamente dall'altra parte della cortina di ferro. I libri vennero banditi negli USA a meno che le copie importate recassero il timbro ''stampato in Germania, occupata dall'URSS''. Clausola che Strand ovviamente non avrebbe mai accettato.
