Description

San Francisco: Jo Mora, 1933. According to the book's introductory page, "This amusing, entertaining Log was written and pictured by Jo Mora on board GRACE LINE ships during several cruises of the Spanish Main." Mora was an Uruguayan-born sculptor, artist, photographer, yarn spinner, and all around interesting fellow - sometimes known as the "Renaissance Man of the West." This was his first book. It is humorously illustrated with cartoonish representations of famous pirates, other characters of the Spanish Main, and cartoon maps of port cities and historic locations. These are accompanied by humorous text, and by blank pages, upon which the owner is intended to write his or her own account of whatever Grace Line cruise they happen to be taking. In this case, Robert Miner of LA documents a 1937 cruise from Los Angeles to New York. Thus, we get a double adventure in which Mora and the journalist compile parallel records. The book is bound in post-and-screw fashion, leading me to wonder if it didn't come in sections, or if its contents could be assembled to suit the owner. At any rate, it seems like a charming way to pass the time aboard a cruise ship. Bound as issued in color-decorated yellow clothe. Light cover wear and soiling. Contents - original printing and manuscript additions - in very good condition.. 14 x 22 cm. unpaginated (about 150 pp.) b/w ills. and maps throughout. Accomplished in manuscript.
