Description:
1856 History of US Navy James Fenimore Cooper War of 1812 Naval MAPS Military

"Every trail has its end, and every calamity brings its lesson!"
― James Fenimore Cooper

James Fenimore Cooper is one of the most prolific and important American authors of the 19th-century. In addition to his writing career, he served in the United States Navy which lead him to publish his own historical perspective on the U.S. Navy, a work that he had worked on for more than a decade prior to its 1839 American release. Even though 'The History of the Navy' was highly criticized, Cooper is one of the foremost authoritative authors on the U.S. Navy.
This fine, American edition describes all the wars, battles, and sea engagements of American warships from the Revolutionary War and late 18th-century through 1856 – the year this edition was published – covering the Battle at Tripoli and important battles in the War of 1812.

Description:
Toronto: The Copp, Clark Company, Ltd., 1900. First Canadian edition. Hardcover. This is the Canadian first edition of Churchill's fourth published book. Both U.S. and Canadian editions were published in June 1900. The Canadian is the scarcest of the three English-language first editions. This Canadian edition was bound in tan cloth with an illustrated front cover like its British counterpart, and is easily distinguishable by a red fleur-de-lis on the spine, thinner binding, and black title and author print. The attractive binding is prone to both hinge breaks and severe spine toning. Here is a respectable and sound ex-library copy. The binding is clean, tight, and square, with only modest shelf wear to extremities and mild spine toning. Nonetheless, there is a whitish rectangle below the author's name on the spine, ostensibly from removal of a library label, library number stamps on both pastedowns, the half title, and the title page, scarring from library pocket removal on the rear pastedown and… Read More

Description:
London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1900. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a first edition, first printing of Churchill's fourth published book. London to Ladysmith via Pretoria is the first of Churchill's two books based on his newspaper despatches sent from the front in South Africa. The British first edition is striking, bound in tan cloth with an illustration of an armoured train on the front cover accompanied by the author's facsimile signature and with the Union flag and Transvaal flag in gilt on the spine beneath a red subtitle. The binding is visually arresting, but the first edition proved notoriously fragile and prone to wear, soiling, and spotting. Truly fine copies are virtually a chimera. This first edition, first printing is a sound and complete survivor, but nonetheless only in good condition, showing both its age and the various depredations to which the edition proved susceptible. The striking illustrated binding is tight, though soiled and stained, spine toned,… Read More

Trumansburg, NY: Out of Step Press. Fine with no dust jacket. 2016. Numbered Edition; First Printing. Pamphlet. The author's non-linear poem about the billeting of soldiers in civilian homes in wartime. Copy 89 of a limited edition of 250. Folded into the form of a letter, the work was letterpress printed in wraps of handmade "combat paper" made from military uniforms. The author says: "Some time ago-maybe a year, maybe two? I had a conversation with some of my Combat Paper brothers (well, the kids call them their combat paper uncles, so it follows…) that led to me writing the poem "Quartering." Which was informed by them, of course, and by all the rooms I'm in, and by imagining what is really required of all the caregivers I love. It's a thought experiment: if we tore down the barracks at military hospitals and offered incentives for Americans in the surrounding neighborhoods to quarter injured service members, what would the honest instructions… Read More
