Description:
New York: E. P. Dutton, 1961 Book. Very Good. Cloth. Signed by Author(s). First Edition. Signed by Kittinger on the front endpaper. Additonally on the f.e.p. is a Sierra Engineering Co. presentation label with Col. Guy Townsend as the recipient and a business card from the same company stapled between the signature and label. Townsend was a fellow test pilot of note. In 1960 Kittinger ascended to a record height(10 miles) in a balloon and proceeded to complete the highest sky dive in history, which would hold up for 50 years. Losing consciousness for a time, free-falling at speeds of 450-600 miles an hour, this jump from the edge of space is singular in a time of pre-space travel aviation. Rubbing to the extremities and edges, especially the rear hinge, a few small soil spots on the edges. Impression from the stapled card shows on the next eight pages. Dust jacket is chipped and creased along the edges- no tears, small fold on the upper front flap. Extremely rare association copy..

Description:
NY: E. P. Dutton, 1961. First Edition . Hardcover. An ex-library copy, which has typical library markings and has water damage along the lower half of the book. The pages are stiff but not stuck together anywhere - the book is readable. This copy is signed on the front endpaper: "To Charlie Harris - with many regards to a pioneer, Happy (coasting?) Joe Kittinger". A scarce book about the jump from an airplane 16 miles high, and reaching speeds in excess of 600 miles per hour. Much scarcer when signed by the primary author.
