The Lord Paper back - 1982

by ROMANO GUARDINI

  • New

"This book is a masterpiece. It embodies the wealth of modern exegetical criticism opened by Protestant theologians like Karl Barth; the great traditions of 'devotio moderna'; French 17th century thought; the great insights of the Catholic mystics; and the matured speculation of scholasticism. But above all, it is an approach to Christ through the Gospels".--Commonwealth.

Description

Gateway Editions, January 1982. Paper Back. New. This brilliant work, a series of theological and devotional meditations on the life and ministry of Christ as related in the Gospels, is as relevant now as when first published in 1954. Guardini constantly relates Christ's words and actions to our peculiarly modern doubts and dilemmas, and never falls prey to the sentimental or romantic piety of some of the older Lives of Christ, whether of Protestant or Catholic origin. He speaks a radical word into our current variations on the Jesus of history vs.Christ of faith debate: ''There is only one true Jesus Christ: the God-man of full uncrippled Christian belief. And faith is as essential to our understanding of him as the eye is to color and the ear to sound. From the start Jesus demanded of all would-be followers...affirmation or rejection, not a little of each... Once we meet him the only way he can be met, in faith; once we renounce all personal judgment, letting Scripture speak with the full weight of its authority, every line of the New Testament suddenly comes alive'' (from the book). 629 pp.

"Guardini s book The Lord has not grown old, precisely because it still leads us to that which is essential, to that which is truly real, Jesus Christ Himself. That is why today this book still has a great mission."
