Description: "Author's Note: Most of the action of this novel takes place in Vienna in the early nineteen-thirties. I have taken several liberties with places, names, and dates; certain Vienna streets are invented, and there are a few anachronisms. As an example radio broadcasting across the Atlantic did not begin in a serious way as early as I indicate, and I have shifted some elements in political chronology. The story is based in part on an actual event, but the characters are drawn largely from the imagination. I have had to include a few minor characters who are counterparts of men in official or semiofficial life at the time eg, the Austrian Press Department, and the presidents of the various press organizations. These, as they appear in the book, are entirely invented, and bear no resemblance whatever to the persons who actually held these positions in Vienna a quarter of a century ago. I myself lived in Vienna in the period covered by The Lost City, and although I draw on much that I saw and learned there the book is a novel, a work of the imagination, not a reminiscence or disguised autobiography."
